Community, Creativity, and Technology: The Interpretive Media Lab at LASHP

For almost a decade, the UCLA Center for Research in Engineering, Media and Performance (REMAP) and California State Parks have collaborated at the Los Angeles State Historic Park (LASHP) to investigate and prototype innovative interpretive approaches that combine community engagement, participatory design and cutting-edge technology. This Interpretive Media Laboratory (IMLab) effort employs LASHP as a “living laboratory” for research and development, programming, and education. IMLab has piloted multi-year programs for local youth in engaged art-making and citizen science, created interactive installations on LA history and culture, developed mobile web and augmented reality applications, and supported cross-disciplinary university courses including the new “interpretive digital media” concentration in the UCLA Dept. of Film, Television and Digital Media. IMLab is now transitioning from a successful and inspiring local project-by-project effort into a longer term, high-impact center of excellence that provides systemic benefit to interpretation at California State Parks.
